Ramon Rivera, 46, and Raymond Rivera, 26, face charges of conspiracy and drug sales in connection with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office “Operation Family Ties,” operation that busted a large-scale, two-gang network that peddled drugs throughout the county.
The father was in court Thursday, despite the bad weather, to discuss a possible plea agreement for the older Rivera. The younger Rivera's case was not called.
According to the DA's office, which would not comment on the possible plea deal, the father-son team supplied the "Carson’s Casino," drug operation with powder cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin from Ramon Rivera’s garage which was located within “Grieco’s Garage” in the City of Newburgh.
The execution of a search warrant at Raymond Rivera’s residence resulted in the seizure of over 60 grams of cocaine, the DA's office said.
All of the other defendants have pleaded guilty, many with deals.
During last week's proceedings, both sides discussed an offer to Ramon Rivera that in exchange for his defense team stopping efforts to receive documentation on the search warrants used in the operation, he would plead guilty to conspiracy and drug possession and face six to 12 years, plus a concurrent six years.
If he fails to accept the deal, because he has multiple past convictions, the DA's office could try and have him sentenced as a persistent felony offender, which would raise the minimum sentence to 15 years to life.
Rivera's attorney asked for more time so his client could weigh his options, which was given.
The date of the next hearing was not available.
